CA15.3 is a marker used for the detection of cancer and its over expression is mostly associated with breast cancer. It is a protein that is produced by normal breast cells. However there is an increased production of CA 15.3 in response to the breast tumors. Their levels are highest when breast cancer has spread to other parts of the body. This test measures the amount of CA 15.3 in the blood. This test is preferably advised to monitor the progress of cancer progression or treatment process rather than a screening test because at the initial stage of cancer CA15.3 level does not rise significantly. Other than breast cancer it is also used for monitoring various other tumors including lungs, ovaries, prostate, pancreas and colon.
It is a protein that is produced by the cells lining the breast ducts and is found in elevated levels in the blood of some individuals with breast cancer.
CA 15-3 is used in monitoring breast cancer progression and treatment response. It is typically measured through a blood test and can help healthcare professionals assess the effectiveness of treatment, detect cancer recurrence, and track disease progression.
However, it is important to note that CA 15-3 is not a reliable screening tool for breast cancer. It is most useful in monitoring known cases of breast cancer and should not be used as a diagnostic test on its own. Additionally, not all individuals with breast cancer will have elevated levels of CA 15-3, and elevated levels can also be seen in non-cancerous conditions such as liver disease or other types of cancers.
