Quad Marker test with graph is a blood test that measures the levels of four important substances in the placenta namely alpha-fetoprotein, human chorionic gonadotropin, estriol, and inhibin A. It helps diagnose genetic disorders and neural tube defects along with ectopic pregnancy and miscarriages. This test is done between 15 and 21 weeks of pregnancy. The quad marker is used as a screening test only and any abnormal result does not mean that the fetus has a birth defect or genetic condition. Females above 35 years of age and who have a family history of birth defects have a higher risk of getting abnormal values of these markers. They are typically offered further testing, this includes repeating the quad marker with a high-definition ultrasound.

It is typically recommended to pregnant individuals between 16 and 20 weeks of gestation.

The quadruple marker test measures the levels of four substances in the mother's blood:

1. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP): AFP is a protein produced by the developing fetus. Abnormal levels of AFP can indicate an increased risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida or anencephaly.

2. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG): hCG is a hormone produced by the placenta. Abnormal levels of hCG can indicate an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome.

3. Estriol: Estriol is a hormone produced by the placenta and the fetal liver. Abnormal levels of estriol can be associated with an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities.

4. Inhibin A: Inhibin A is a hormone produced by the placenta and the ovaries. Abnormal levels of inhibin A can indicate an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities.

By analyzing the levels of these substances, the quadruple marker test helps assess the likelihood of certain conditions. However, it's important to note that the test does not provide a definitive diagnosis but rather indicates the need for further evaluation or diagnostic tests, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling.

The results of the quadruple marker test are evaluated in combination with other factors, such as maternal age and ultrasound findings, to estimate the risk of chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects. Based on the results, healthcare providers can provide appropriate guidance, counseling, and further medical interventions if necessary.

It is important to discuss the quadruple marker test with a healthcare provider to understand its benefits, limitations, and implications for prenatal care and decision-making. They can provide personalized information and advice based on the specific circumstances of the pregnancy.
