Urine routine microscopy is a microscopic examination of urine sample to check for the presence of blood cells, crystals, bacteria, parasites, and cells from tumors in it. This test is mostly advised in case of symptoms suggestive of urinary tract infection (UTI) such as abdominal pain, back pain, painful or frequent urination & blood in the urine. Urinary tract is a combination of kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. UTI is not fatal in general, however if left untreated it may cause damage to multiple organs. This test is used as a part of routine investigation, work up for planned surgery and confirm the finding of other diagnosis such as kidney disorders, liver diseases, diabetes etc. Pregnant women should get this test done regularly to avoid infection and related diseases.

During the test, a urine sample is collected, usually in a clean container, and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The laboratory technicians examine the urine visually, measure its volume, and conduct chemical tests using specialized reagent strips or instruments.

A routine urine examination helps in diagnosing a range of conditions, including urinary tract infections, kidney diseases, presence of kidney stones, diabetes, liver problems, and various other systemic disorders. It can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment or check for potential drug toxicity.

The results of a routine urine examination can provide important insights into overall health and help guide further diagnostic investigations. However, it is essential to interpret the results in context with the patient's medical history, symptoms, and other relevant tests.

If you are advised to undergo a routine urine examination, it is important to follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare professional, such as collecting the first-morning urine or avoiding certain foods or medications before the test. The results will be interpreted by a healthcare provider, typically a primary care physician or urologist, who will discuss the findings with you, address any concerns, and recommend further investigations or treatment if needed.
