A gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) test measures the amount of GGT in the blood. GGT is an enzyme found in many organs throughout the body, with the highest concentrations found in the liver. High levels of GGT in the blood can be a sign of liver disease or damage to the bile ducts. The GGT test is most often used to diagnose liver disease, check for blockage in the bile ducts, figure out if liver damage is due to liver disease or a bone disorder, and monitor disorders related to alcohol use. GGT test is not very specific and is not useful in differentiating between various causes of liver damage, this test is used in conjugation with other tests like alkaline phosphatase.
GGT is often used as a marker to evaluate liver health, as elevated levels can indicate liver damage or disease. Specifically, it is sensitive to conditions affecting the bile ducts, such as cholestasis or obstruction. GGT levels may also be elevated in liver conditions like hepatitis, cirrhosis, or alcohol abuse.
However, GGT is not a highly specific test, and elevated levels can also be seen in other conditions unrelated to the liver, such as heart disease, diabetes, pancreatitis, or certain medications.
Interpretation of GGT levels should be done in conjunction with other liver function tests and clinical evaluation by a healthcare professional. Monitoring GGT levels over time can help assess the progress of liver diseases or the effectiveness of treatment.
