Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (?-hCG ) Total test measures the amount of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone in the blood preferably 10 days post conception. The levels of this hormone increase in the blood during early pregnancy, between 8 to 10 weeks, after which they start falling. This test is commonly used to confirm pregnancy. However, it can also help to diagnose suspected tumors, post-miscarriage monitoring and detect ectopic pregnancy. After 6-7 weeks of pregnancy, hCG levels are not very helpful to test for the viability of the pregnancy. Instead, an ultrasound is done to confirm the presence of a fetal heartbeat. Low ? hCG is seen in miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy while high ?-hCG is observed in case of multiple pregnancies.
It is commonly referred to as the pregnancy hormone and plays a crucial role in maintaining pregnancy. The levels of β-hCG in a woman's blood or urine are measured in pregnancy tests to determine whether she is pregnant.
During early pregnancy, β-hCG levels rise rapidly and can be detected through urine or blood tests. These tests are used to confirm pregnancy, often as early as a few days after a missed period. By detecting the presence of β-hCG, these tests provide a reliable indication of pregnancy.
In addition to confirming pregnancy, β-hCG levels may be monitored during the early stages of pregnancy as part of prenatal care. Serial measurements of β-hCG may be performed to ensure that the levels are rising as expected. Any significant decrease
