Fasting Blood Sugar, also called Fasting Plasma Glucose test, measures your fasting blood glucose level. Fasting means you should not eat or drink (anything except water) for 8 hours. This test is used to screen for prediabetes and diabetes and check the effectiveness of medications or dietary changes for people diagnosed with diabetes. Apart from diabetes, higher levels of glucose can be seen in insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, and pancreatic, liver, or kidney disease. Engaging in physical activity and consuming a balanced diet are a great way to control your sugar levels.
During the overnight fast, the body relies on stored glucose from the liver to maintain adequate blood glucose levels. In a healthy individual, the fasting blood glucose level is typically in the range of 70 to 99 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter).
Elevated fasting blood glucose levels may indicate impaired fasting glucose, which is a precursor to type 2 diabetes. A fasting blood glucose level of 100 to 125 mg/dL is considered borderline high, while a level of 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate occasions may indicate diabetes.
Interpretation of fasting blood glucose levels should be done in consultation with a healthcare professional, as various factors like medication, overall health, and concurrent medical conditions can affect the results. Fasting blood glucose tests are commonly used for diabetes screening, diagnosis, and monitoring, and can guide treatment plans such as lifestyle modifications, medication, and regular monitoring.
