A gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) test measures the amount of GGT in the blood. GGT is an enzyme found in many organs throughout the body, with the highest concentrations found in the liver. High levels of GGT in the blood can be a sign of liver disease or damage to the bile ducts. The GGT test is most often used to diagnose liver disease, check for blockage in the bile ducts, figure out if liver damage is due to liver disease or a bone disorder, and monitor disorders related to alcohol use. GGT test is not very specific and is not useful in differentiating between various causes of liver damage, this test is used in conjugation with other tests like alkaline phosphatase.
It is usually conducted to assess for diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance.
During this test, the patient is required to fast overnight. At the start of the test, a blood sample is taken to measure the baseline fasting blood glucose level. Then, the patient is given a glucose-rich drink containing a standardized amount of glucose. Blood samples are taken at regular intervals, typically every 30 minutes, for up to two hours after consuming the drink.
The purpose of the GTT is to monitor how the body processes and clears glucose from the bloodstream. It helps to evaluate the body's response to glucose and identify any abnormalities, such as impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes.
Interpreting the results of a GTT involves assessing the levels of blood glucose at each sampling time-point. Normal results show a rise in blood glucose levels after consuming the glucose drink, followed by a gradual decline to normal levels within two hours. Abnormal results may indicate impaired glucose tolerance (pre-diabetes) or diabetes.
The glucose tolerance test is usually ordered by healthcare professionals to diagnose diabetes, evaluate gestational diabetes during pregnancy, or assess certain hormone imbalances. It is important to follow any pre-test instructions given by the healthcare provider, such as fasting before the test, to ensure accurate results.
