Antithyroglobulin antibody (Anti- Tg) test is used to measure antibodies against thyroglobulin, a protein secreted by the thyroid gland. Thyroglobulin is essential for the production of the thyroid hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Anti- Tg may also be found in case of certain autoimmune diseases, when your immune system creates antibodies against your body?s own healthy cells. This test is advised if one experiences symptoms of hyperthyroidism (such as sweating and rapid heart rate) or hypothyroidism. It also helps to measure the effectiveness of thyroid treatment and monitor the recurrence of thyroid cancer. If the levels of antithyroglobulin antibodies in the blood are significantly high, this may be a sign of a serious autoimmune disorder, such as Graves? disease or Hashimoto thyroiditis.

Thyroglobulin levels can be measured through a blood test called thyroid thyroglobulin testing.

Thyroglobulin testing is commonly used in the management of thyroid cancer. After thyroid cancer treatment, a rise in thyroglobulin levels may indicate the presence of remaining or recurrent cancer cells. Thyroglobulin testing is used as a tumor marker to monitor the effectiveness of treatment and detect any potential cancer recurrence.

In addition to its role in thyroid cancer monitoring, thyroglobulin testing can also be useful in evaluating thyroid function. Elevated levels of thyroglobulin in the blood can be seen in various thyroid conditions, including thyroiditis and goiter. However, it is essential to consider other thyroid-related blood tests, such as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (T4), for a comprehensive understanding of thyroid health.

Interpretation of thyroglobulin test results should be performed by a medical professional who can consider the individual's medical history, symptoms, and other relevant factors. This helps in determining the appropriate management and treatment plan for thyroid-related conditions.
