This test measures the levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in the blood. SHBG is a protein made by the liver and attaches itself to the sex hormones testosterone, estradiol and dihydrotestosterone and transports them through blood to the other organs of the body. It is most commonly used to detect low testosterone level in males and high testosterone level in females. Symptoms of low testosterone levels in men include low sex drive, difficulty getting an erection, fertility problems and high testosterone in females is manifested as excess body and facial hair growth, deepening of voice, menstrual irregularities, acne, weight gain and fertility problems.
When SHBG binds to these sex hormones, it forms a complex that reduces their availability and bioactivity in the bloodstream. This binding process provides a buffering mechanism to regulate the level and distribution of sex hormones throughout the body.
The levels of SHBG in the body are influenced by various factors such as age, sex, hormonal imbalance, and metabolic disorders. Generally, females tend to have higher levels of SHBG compared to males. Additionally, conditions like liver disease, obesity, and certain medications can also impact SHBG levels.
SHBG has significant implications for overall health and fertility. In males, adequate levels of SHBG help maintain a healthy balance of sex hormones and prevent conditions like androgen deficiency. In females, SHBG regulates the availability of estrogen and its influence on reproductive functions.
